The Foil Drive Assist MAX is perfectly suited to those looking for extra thrust for heavier riders or smaller boards and foils, longer ride times and ultimate flexibility of how you choose to foil. Surf, Wing, Downwind, Wake and Flatwater, the Assist MAX does it all!
This is a very cool tool that you can bolt on to any foil and have power assist. It took me a bit longer than expected to learn as I was trying to paddle into waves, power up and then stand up. After a few failed sessions, I took out my foil drive and learned the "Efoil start" where you go to your knees, then front foot then back foot to get up. This worked way better and I could Efoil around on my prone board.
Next step was learning to hop up on foil. The Foil Drive is a great tool to learn to pump as you can get up and get on foil in the flat and then hop up past the motor pod and pump around. I have gotten a lot better at pumping by training on the foil drive in the flat.
Final step was powering out to a swell and turning on it, then hopping on foil and foil surfing. After a few sessions, I got this dialed. The cool thing is you can surf swells way outside the line up and then power out to a new swell.
The rigging I have really been liking is the 2024 North Swell 42L, Armstrong 795 mast w/ 60fuse, HA1080 and Surf 205 tail.
This Foil Drive Assist MAX Power Kit is insane! I've been using this for surf foiling and its been incredible. It took me three sessions to really get comfortable and figure out the technique with this. Even if you are a really good foiler, adding the FoilDrive into the mix definitely adds a new element and set of skills to figure out. The transition to up on foil and when to give it more or less throttle takes practice.
I've been using this with an Appletree Pro Foil V2 board (carbon fiber), Armstrong 795 performance mast and mostly with the HA880, HA980, and HA1080 wings. I've used the 20cm cable motor. With the Max Power battery I can get a full hour session being somewhat mindful of battery usage. With the Max Sport its probably 30-40 min max.
The whole kit definitely adds some noticeable weight to your foil setup obviously. It takes a bit to learn how to ride it, and especially pump, with the added weight. Using the Sport battery makes pumping much easier, but with the cost of shorter run time.
Now that I've dialed in how to use this and wing sizing/mast position, I am going out for a session on days where I would normally catch MAYBE one or two waves, really bad conditions, and doing laps wave after wave for an hour straight. Its great going out and getting a ton of time on foil, and a ton of time actively on a wave. I found that its a great form of foil training. I have so much more time on foil that I can practice better technique while wave riding.
