DOWNWIND PROGRESSION

The evolution of the Downwind Board concept.

Taking what Armstrong learned from the Downwind boards initially introduced in 2023, the evolution of these boards is faster, more refined, and even more stable per size for riders from rookies through advanced. Like the previous generation, these boards are also terrifically versatile and are excellent for light-wind winging and SUP surf foiling.

INCREMENTAL REFINEMENTS

Improvements from the nose to tail, deck to bottom.

Seeking greater efficiency and user-friendliness in the paddle pop-up, each size has been lengthened to improve paddling speed and increase stability. The foil tracks are now further forward as well, for increased maneuverability and lift. When combined with subtle refinements to the rocker line and overall shape of the tail, these boards lift off the water exceptionally cleanly and easily.

Forward Geometry

Limitless options to fasttrack your progression.

Emphasising modularity within board design, Armstrong introduced a major innovation to wing boards in 2021 with the Forward Geometry concept. Designed to work with any brand of foil, the FG design increases responsiveness by placing the foil more centrally and reducing swing weight in turns. The Wing board range carries on that design legacy with FG foil tracks that are strategically placed well forward for maximum manoeuvrability and a hyper connected feel on foil, delivering high performance to riders on all the board sizes.

More Grip. More Control.

Get the most out of your session.

Inspired by the new deck grip design on the Wing FG foilboards, the downwind boards include a fully redesigned grip tailored specifically to provide riders with maximum control, comfort, and versatility when downwinding. In conjunction with the flatter deck shape, this grip features raised central bars above the foil tracks and elevated blocks in each corner of the pad, front, for intuitive foot placement.

Key Features

New design has more stability and gets you on foil fast

I have ridden all the new sizes personally and compared these to the new 8’11” DW performance board in various conditions foiling and winging. At 185lbs, I lose stability in the smaller sizes when downwind foiling but can use as a light wind wing board easily. The new shape allows you to gain speed easily and recovers a lot better than the older model if the nose or tail touch down while pumping. This shape is much better all around but if you’re only doing long distance downwinders in the ocean, go with the performance shape. If you have no prone foil experience or SUP race experience this is the board for you to try downwinding, maximize light winds for winging or paddle up on flat water. If you are just starting out or looking to do more turns on waves I’d recommend going with the larger size with the same volume or 20L more than your current wing board. For beginners that are winging this board helps with yaw and roll stability so you can come up on foil faster once the nose of the board is aligned with your wing.
