From the Shaper

"Taj requested something short ‘n fun, but still a (normal) board. Nothing too fishy. Right about, or just over, my typical volume, but just squished down and playful."

The REAL Deal

Taj took a few contests off the WSL Tour schedule to be at home for the birth of his first child. This meant surfing for fun, rather than surfing in competition heats. He used this time to pair up with Matt Biolos and design something shorter and more fun to surf than your standard, ultra high performance shortboard. The result is a smash hit, and what could become …Lost’s best selling shortboard in the 2016 season and beyond.

Tech Specs
• Full figured, shorter length, shortboard design
• More foam than what you’re used to seeing in “pro model” shortboards
• Conservative rocker
• Generous tailblock width
• Single to double concave bottom shape
• Thruster design, 5-fin available on custom orders

What We Like

Let’s get straight to the point of what most of you are concerned with. “Is this a board I can surf?” If you look back at the Taj lineage of ..Lost pro model boards – Whiplash, Beach Buggy and Sub Buggy – they were all lower volume boards, designed to be ridden aggressively by the highest caliber of surfers. Outside of that group of talented individuals, they were pretty narrow and chippy for most.

The ...Lost Baby Buggy (left) and Quiver Killer (right).

The Baby Buggy is a completely different animal. It’s shorter, wider, fuller, flatter and has a nice sized tailblock for extra drive. It’s a VERY accessible design for most surfers and a board that clicks with you and makes you a better surfer. The overall design of the board is tuned for the waves that normal human beings get to ride (not pro surfers at fantasy locations in a heat of 2-4 people). This means the board excels in average surf, but can also be taken in surf outside the norm, due to the balanced feel and the confidence it inspires. It works in small waves, better waves, mush and punch. For those of you that have been turned of by shortboards, thinking hybrids are easier and more forgiving, the Baby Buggy gets you thinking about shortboards again. Not only thinking about them, RAVING about them. It’s a solid “go to” performer is a wide range of surf.

Nica test quiver: (top to bottom) Maurice Cole Prowtow, ...Lost Baby Buggy, Maurice Cole Dirty Dingo, ...Lost Quiver Killer

We got to surf our Baby Buggy for 8 days in Nicaragua while staying with the crew at Surfari Charters. We surfed it in everything from thigh high zippers up to overhead, thick spitting beach breaks. This board never disappointed and had everyone without one, ordering their own by the end of the trip.

Dialing in the ...Lost Baby Buggy on some dreamy Nica points.

Coming primarily from the hybrid camp, this board just makes shortboard surfing super easy and “high performance”. Every one of your turns is faster, sharper and more vertical. You also find yourself fitting in more turns per wave, finding more barrels and throwing more spray. It’s a bad ass board that you don’t have to be a bad ass to surf. If you’re already coming from an all shortboard quiver, this board has a nice balanced feel, is super fast, and can cover an insane range of conditions, all the way down to metro reality mush.

Insider Info

The …Lost V2 Shortboard has been a perennial favorite at REAL and around the world for the last several years. The Taj Baby Buggy has that same type of all around feel, but in a fuller package, with a touch more rocker and a wider tail block. The wider tail block is key to extending the reality wave range, and that’s something the standard V2 shortboard didn’t have for sub pro surfers.

Just about the only thing that went “wrong” when surfing this board was under-sizing the fins the first session. With the normal fins we would use (FCS2 Mayhem Larges) this board felt like it needed to be driven solely off the rail, with no squirt from the fins. It also had a slightly “wobbly” feel to it on high-speed bottom turns. We switched to a slightly larger fin (FCS2 Performer XLs) and this corrected the problem and made the board pure magic. Goes to show that fins make a difference, and even if you ride the same fins in everything, that you shouldn’t be closed minded to try something else when your go to set isn’t working. Obviously, this board and fins are for a larger surfer (215 lbs) so take the info gathered and apply it to your weight and fin sizing to dial in your Baby Buggy.

Why You Want This Board

You want a no nonsense shortboard that brings high performance to the masses and to reality conditions. This board is a blast!
