Information About Chicama
The World's Longest Left!

Chicama is the longest left-hand point break in the world, located in northwestern Peru's La Libertad Region, north of Trujillo. The wave stretches 2.5 miles from the farthest take-off spot near the fishing pier. It is exposed to swells from S 180 to NW 315 degrees, with SW swells being optimal, particularly at 5.5ft @ 16 seconds. This swell energy bends around the tip of the rocks, providing long, clean waves ideal for foiling and surfing.
La Punta is the furthest spot up the point and the main take-off spot for foiling. Exposed to predominant S winds, it offers groomed swell lines for miles. The wave starts near an Incan burial ground and peels down the point, mellowing out as it approaches the Chicama section.
The Point is the most famous part of Chicama, holding surf up to 8-10ft on solid swells. The wave is well-shaped, fast, and moderately hollow, breaking over soft sand. The scene is surreal with moonscape backdrops and friendly locals, offering a place of pure power and raw energy.
Weather
Expect temperatures between 60-80°F during the Peruvian fall. Mornings are cooler (60-70°F), warming mid-day (75-85°F), and cooling in the evenings (60-65°F). Winds are lighter in the morning (8-15mph), building to 20-30mph mid-day to afternoon, starting SE and shifting to S (side-offshore) as the day heats up. Chicama's coastal desert receives minimal rainfall, less than an inch per year.

Suggested Surf Gear
What gear should you bring for surfing Chicama?

Considerations for Surfers

Surfboards
- A couple of surfboards suitable for point breaks, such as a shortboard, a fish, mid-length or a longboard depending on your preference and skill level.
- Board bags with adequate padding for travel protection.
Wetsuit
- A 3/2mm wetsuit is typically sufficient for the water temperatures in Chicama.
- Optional: Spring suit or Short Sleeve Full
- A second, dry suit is great for multiple sessions per day

Suggested Foil, Foil Drive, & Wing Gear
What Foil, Foil Drive, and Wing gear should you bring for Chicama?

Considerations for Foilers
- Wave Conditions: March offers consistent swells with wave heights typically ranging from 3 to 6 feet, ideal for intermediate and advanced wingers and foilers.
- Wind: Offshore winds are most consistent in the mornings, providing clean waves. Afternoons can bring stronger winds, so early tow foil sessions are recommended follow by afternoon wing sessions.
- Skill Level: Chicama's long, smooth waves are perfect for intermediate and advanced wingers and foilers looking to enjoy lengthy rides and improve their skills.
Inflatable Wings
- Suggested wing size are 4m to 6m depending on wind conditions.
Wing, Foil Drive, and Tow Foils
- Medium to high-aspect foils prioritize efficiency and glide to maximize long rides. A foil with good pumping ability will help you connect sections.
- Front Wing Sizing depends on your weight and skill level. Larger wings can work for smaller waves or easier takeoff while smaller wings offer additional performance.
- A 75-85cm mast is ideal for handling the long, open faces.
Wing, Foil Drive, and Tow Boards
- Wing Board- A stable and maneuverable wing foil board that handles well in long, clean waves.
- Tow and Prone Board- We recommend packing one board for prone and/or tow foiling. It’s best to have a little volume while waiting between waves or paddling into waves if needed.
- Foil Drive Board- A board specifically designed and set up for Foil Drive is best in addition to your prone, tow, and wing board.
Foil Drive
- Foil Drive Assist MAX is the flagship model with maximum power, runtime, thrust and versatility. Perfect for the long waves of Chicama.
- Foil Drive Max Travel Battery - allows you to travel with your gear! The MAX Travel Battery breaks down into three smaller sections for approved airline travel with 2 parts being 129.6wh and one part at 97.2wh.
