The Maurice Cole Reverse Vee Alpha Twin is a leaned out, stretched version of the Maurice Cole Reverse Vee Twin Pin. The Alpha Twin excels in a wide range of surf conditions from knee high to DOH+.
“The Alpha Twin works well as a longboard replacement as most surfers who ride longboards out of necessity rarely ride the nose.”
Trip Forman
The Maurice Cole Reverse Vee Alpha Twin is a leaned out, stretched version of the insanely popular Maurice Cole Reverse Vee Twin Pin, and the 6th board in the Reverse Vee design collaboration with REAL and Maurice Cole. This leaned out design allows the Alpha Twin to be ridden in longer lengths 7’7 up to 10’1 without getting too bulky. The Alpha Twin can be surfed effectively in surf knee high up to double overhead plus. Depending on sizing, the Alpha Twin can be used as a one board quiver, a mid length, a longboard replacement, a glider, a step up, or a fun gun.
Reverse Vee Alpha Twin Tech SpecsAll of the Maurice Cole Reverse Vees excel in late drops due to the reverse vee bottom shape and thinner rails. This bottom shape literally auto corrects almost all late drops into “makes” since it’s easier for the board to lean over on rail compared to boards with aggressive concaves. The Reverse Vee bottom shape has proven itself in conditions outside extreme with the popularity of the Maurice Cole Reverse Vee Shorty, Double D and Hybrid excelling in everyday conditions.
The Reverse Vee Alpha Twin is designed as a leaned out, stretched version of the Reverse Vee Twin Pin. This allows it to be ridden in longer lengths (7’7 to 10’1) without being too bulky. This all purpose “Swiss Army Knife” design allows the Alpha Twin to be surfed in almost any surf conditions knee high up to double overhead plus, depending on sizing of the board and skill of the surfer.
The twin fin set up is fast and friction free when paired up with the NVS Maurice Cole Reverse Vee Twin Fins
We surfed the Reverse Vee Twin Pin with four surfers - Byron Sewell, Cory Lermo, Jake Sacks and Trip Forman - all coming from all board backgrounds, shortboards, longboards, mid lengths, gliders, guns, you name it. Across the board everyone was stoked with the performance in a WIDE variety of conditions. On the small side, we had plenty of days in the knee to stomach high range where the Alpha Twin excelled with great paddle speed, high wave count, speed and trim down the line, and impressive maneuverability for its size - the Alpha Twin we tested was 8’7 x 21.5 x 2.87 with a drop dead gorgeous 80’s airbrush by @ovrspra
As the surf built in size we got to surf the Alpha Twin in chest to head high tubes where the board held in confidently just like the MC Twin Pin. The Reverse Vee bottom, paired with the longer rail line, channel bottom and set back twin fin, make this board a confidence monster as the surf builds and the conditions get challenging. The Alpha Twin gets into the wave early and allows you to set your line way before you’d be there on shorter boards, and without the pole vaulting wider bulk of longboards. Most wouldn’t expect this level of grip, hold and confidence out of a twin fin, but these boards (Twin Pin, Diamond Twin, and Alpha Twin) have more hold than thrusters and quads due to the longer rail lines, set back twin fins, and channel bottoms.
We were also lucky enough to score a few hurricane swells that opened up the outer bars with well overhead surf. Here the Alpha Twin keeps the pace it proved in smaller waves, with its ability to cover huge playing fields with high paddle speed, stroke into fast moving waves, and cover extensive ground down the line due to the longer rail and higher speed potential. Even in larger surf the Alpha Twin has confidence on lock. It’s a great board for when the outer bars or reefs are firing and you don’t want to get lost out there on a shortboard. Think Blacks, Ocean Beach, Wilderness and other large waves where having a bigger boards helps out with your win ratio.
With all the range the Alpha Twin offers, we thought it would be helpful to list all the applications this board would excel in when ridden in different lengths:
The Alpha Twin works well as a longboard replacement as most surfers who ride longboards out of necessity rarely ride the nose. The big bulky longboard nose makes punching out through the surf harder, and late drops significantly harder. The Alpha Twin paddles as well as the same size longboard, maybe even faster since the sleeker nose cuts chop better, and is significantly easier to make drops on, and maneuver on the wave.
With all this said, the Alpha Twin is a board that will get a lot of use in your quiver!
You’re looking for a single board that covers the widest range of conditions, or for a board that excels when the rest of your quiver is topping out. The Alpha Twin beats current and crowded lineups like no other.
