Surf Foiling Gear Progression | A Coach's Perspective

In the video and below, REAL Pro Coach Brendan Guthrie will walk you through the gear progression of surf foiling, from beginner to advanced.

Beginner Surf Foil Gear:

You want a board that has high volume for easy paddling into waves, stability on foil, and slow take-off speed to allow for more control. Low-aspect foils like the Armstrong S1 1250 are perfect for most beginners due to gradual lift at slow speeds, maximum stability, and large speed range. I usually pair the S1 1250 with the S1 330 tail or Flow 235 tail, 70 or 60 cm fuselage and the 600mm, 655mm or 725mm mast to prevent hitting the bottom and limit the height that students get coming out of the water.
For the board, sizing usually is based on prior surfing background and foil experience. If new to both, I recommend the 75L or 85L midlength to allow for easy paddling and more stability on the pop-up. If proficient at paddling from surf experience but new to foiling go down to the 55L or 65L.

Intermediate Surf Foil Gear:

At the intermediate level, you want to size down for more maneuverability.  You can size down the board or stick with similar board size as a beginner and size down the foil.  Start with tail wing size then more to sizing down the front wing or switching to mid aspect foil. We recommend using smaller midlength sizes, 38L, 45L or 55L as well as any of the prone surf foilboards in the 28L-48L range. Mast length should be 725-795 range on the performance carbon mast based on depth. I ride 795 the majority of the time. We recommend staying on S1 1250 or MA 1225, MA 1000

Advanced Surf Foil Gear

Push your boundaries of surf foiling by moving from a midlength board to a prone board with lower volume or volume similar to your surfboard dims.  Smaller MA wings or HA wings only. My setup is HA 880 or 780, speed 180 or dart 140 tail and 795 performance mast with 55L midlength or 36L prone board. My surfboard dims are 33-36L and I’m 180lbs.
